Getting people to subscribe to your Substack newsletter can be challenging.
I compiled a few tips that have worked for me and others I know.
First, platforms like Newsletterworthy let you put your newsletter in front of thousands of potential readers every month. They have affordable paid promotion options worth checking out if you're starting.
UPDATE: The newsletterworthy website has been taken down and is not working anymore. I’m not sure what happened to them.
Another great tactic is linking up with other Substack writers in your niche. Reach out and see if they'll give your newsletter a shoutout to their audience if you do the same for them. You can also engage with their stuff by leaving comments mentioning your newsletter.
If your newsletter is focused on a specific topic, contribute free content on sites like Vocal, Quora, Reddit, and Medium. At the end, include a link to your paid Substack as a "for more, subscribe here" call to action.
Social media is a must for promotion these days. Share teasers of your upcoming newsletter posts across Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc., with a link to subscribe. You can also run cheap promo posts as ads targeting interests related to your content niche.
Within the Substack platform, take advantage of their "Notes" feature to summarize each issue in a post that acts as a preview. And turn on recommendations so Substack can suggest your newsletter to other writers and readers.
Finally, don't sleep on newer platforms like Instagram Reels, TikTok, and YouTube Shorts. Create bite-size video previews that show your personality and give people a taste of the great content they'll get by subscribing.
The most important things are consistent quality content that establishes you as an authority, finding creative ways to get it in front of your target audience's eyeballs, and making it easy for interested people to subscribe with clear calls to action.
It takes work, but if you stick with it and keep implementing different promotion tactics, that subscriber number will steadily grow over time.

Oh, I didn't know about Newsletterworthy.
That's definetly something we need to check out in our community.
In June we'll discover sites that can help us grow from the outside in.
I'll add this to my list.
Please keep me in the loop and let me know how you're faring with it.

Valuable post!
Terrific tips, Anshul. I'm printing this out to use as a checklist for the future. I love the idea of doing previews.
